Bail or Judicial Interim Release, is often the first and most important initial step for an individual charged with a criminal offence. If the police do not release you after your arrest, by way of a PTA (promise to appear) with or without an undertaking (conditions of release), a "bail" order is usually necessary in order for you to be released from custody in a timely fashion.

Depending on your circumstances and the nature of the charges you are facing, the process of getting bail can either be simple or complex. Contacting a lawyer immediately after your arrest (or prior to turning yourself in, if possible) can help ensure that you are released from custody as soon as possible.

Once you are released, varying or changing your bail order may become necessary from time to time and a lawyer can assist you with this process.

If you are denied bail by a Judge, in certain circumstances you can apply to have your detention reviewed; this process is referred to as a Bail Review.
